BEFORE TREATMENT

Seven questions to ask before dental work

You do not need to make a non-emergency decision while you still feel confused. These questions help turn a verbal recommendation into a plan you can evaluate.

Understand the diagnosis

Ask what the dentist sees, where it is, and how the finding supports the recommendation. Request that the dentist show you the X-ray, photograph, pocket measurement, or other finding when one is available.

  • What happens if I wait?
  • Are there reasonable alternatives?
  • What result should I expect?
02

Understand the complete cost

Ask for every expected step, not only today's procedure. A root canal, for example, may be followed by a buildup or crown. Confirm laboratory fees, imaging, sedation, follow-up visits, and what happens if insurance pays less than estimated.

03

Know the next step

Before leaving, know whether the plan is urgent, whether you want a second opinion, and whom to call with questions. Keep the estimate, consent forms, receipts, and EOBs together. For severe symptoms or emergencies, seek prompt professional care instead of delaying for price research.
